Khmer Traditional Board Game
One of the most captivating traditional board games in Cambodia is known as Ouk Chaktrang (អុកចត្រង្គ). The term "Ouk" is believed to originate from the sound produced when a chess piece moves on the board during a check. In the context of the game, "Ouk" means "check," and it is customary for the player to announce it loudly when they check the opponent's King.
The game is also referred to as "Chaktrang," a name derived from the Sanskrit word "Chaturanga" (चतुरङ्ग), reflecting its Indian origins. Similar to international chess, Ouk Chaktrang is a two-player game, but in Cambodia, it often involves two teams, adding an extra layer of excitement and entertainment. Cambodian men frequently gather at local barbershops or men's cafes in their towns or villages to enjoy this engaging pastime.
The primary goal of Chaktrang, like chess, is to checkmate the opponent's King. At the start of the game, the first move is determined by mutual agreement between the players. In subsequent games, the player who lost the previous match traditionally has the privilege of moving first. If the initial game ends in a draw, the first move in the next game is once again decided by mutual agreement.
Another popular Cambodian chess variant is Rek. For more details, please refer to the section on the Rek game.
