Nintendo has recently announced that the new Switch 2 game cards will sometimes serve as keys for game downloads rather than containing the full game data. This change was detailed in a customer support post released following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct this morning. As the Switch 2 is set to launch in June, consumers can continue purchasing physical Switch games as they have over the past eight years, but there are important nuances to consider.

The post specifically addresses game-key cards, which are physical cards that contain only a download key for the game. Upon inserting these cards into the Switch 2, players will need to download the game separately. These cards will be clearly labeled on the lower front of their packaging, ensuring transparency for buyers.

The introduction of game-key cards has sparked discussions among fans who value the traditional plug-and-play experience of physical games. Concerns have been raised about these cards potentially replacing traditional game cartridges entirely. However, current evidence suggests this is not the case. For instance, while some upcoming Switch 2 titles such as Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster include the game-key card disclaimer, others like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not.

It seems that game-key cards may be used primarily for larger games that could benefit from the download approach, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition has been confirmed by CD Projekt Red to ship with a full 64 GB game card on the Switch 2’s launch day.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo highlighted the enhanced technology of its new red game cards, which boast faster data reading speeds than those of the original 2017 console. This emphasis on improved hardware performance suggests that not all cartridges will be mere key containers.
